At Takshashila Institute of Autism and Neurodevelopmental Sciences, intervention begins with understanding the individual—not simply the diagnosis.
We recognize that every autistic individual and every person with a neurodevelopmental difference has unique strengths, needs, preferences, abilities, challenges, interests, and aspirations. Therefore, our intervention approach is individualized according to the person’s developmental profile and functional goals.
Our interventions are individualized, evidence-informed, functional, and developmentally appropriate, supporting individuals across the lifespan—from early childhood through adolescence and adulthood.
Our focus extends beyond the acquisition of isolated skills. We work toward meaningful outcomes in areas such as communication, social participation, emotional wellbeing, independence, adaptive functioning, education, vocational development, daily living, and participation in family and community life. We work collaboratively with individuals, parents, caregivers, educators, and relevant professionals to develop personalized pathways that support greater autonomy, participation, functional independence, and quality of life.
We support individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental differences in developing functional, adaptive, and participation-based skills. Intervention may focus on areas such as sensory-motor abilities, coordination, fine-motor skills, motor planning, functional activities, and everyday occupational performance. Our goal is to support greater independence and meaningful participation across home, school, work, and community environments.
We support individuals in understanding and responding more effectively to their sensory experiences and environmental demands. Through purposeful and individualized sensory-motor activities, intervention may focus on sensory processing, regulation, attention, body awareness, motor organization, and participation. The goal is to support the individual in engaging more comfortably, effectively, and meaningfully in everyday environments and activities.
We support individuals in developing meaningful, functional, and effective communication. Depending on the individual’s needs, intervention may address speech, receptive language, expressive language, comprehension, vocabulary, functional communication, and social communication. Where appropriate, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and other alternative communication approaches may be incorporated to provide individuals with effective ways to communicate, express their needs, share experiences, and connect with others.
We understand behaviour within the context of the individual’s communication, environment, developmental needs, skills, and experiences and seek to understand what a behaviour may be communicating or expressing. Through individualized assessment, we consider strengths, skill gaps, environmental factors, triggers, patterns, and behaviours that may interfere with learning or participation. Evidence-informed behavioural strategies are used to support the development of functional skills, adaptive behaviour, communication, self-regulation, independence, and meaningful participation.
We support individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental differences in developing, maintaining, and strengthening their physical abilities. Intervention may focus on posture, balance, coordination, mobility, flexibility, muscle strength, motor skills, and functional movement according to individual needs. Our aim is to promote physical functioning, participation, mobility, and greater independence in everyday activities and environments.
We use play as a natural and meaningful medium for expression, connection, communication, learning, and development. Play-based approaches provide opportunities to explore emotions, develop relationships, strengthen communication, practise social interaction, and build coping skills. We aim to create a safe, supportive, and engaging environment where individuals can express themselves, explore their interests, develop skills, and experience meaningful interaction.
We support individuals in developing the skills required for meaningful participation in social situations and relationships. Through structured activities, role play, group experiences, guided practice, and real-life opportunities, intervention may address interaction, communication, sharing, turn-taking, cooperation, perspective-taking, and appropriate social participation. The focus is on developing confidence, functional social skills, and meaningful participation across everyday environments.
We support individuals in strengthening cognitive and learning skills that contribute to academic performance, everyday functioning, and independent participation. Intervention may address areas such as attention, memory, problem-solving, reasoning, sequencing, processing, organization, and flexible thinking. Activities are adapted to the individual’s developmental level, learning profile, and functional needs to support learning, understanding, problem-solving, and functional adaptation.
We support individuals in developing the everyday skills required for greater functional independence. Training may include self-care, dressing, grooming, eating, toileting, personal hygiene, household activities, functional routines, and community-based activities. The focus is on developing practical skills that can be applied in real-life situations. Greater functional independence can contribute to confidence, participation, self-esteem, autonomy, and quality of life.
We support individuals in recognizing, understanding, expressing, and regulating their emotions in meaningful and functional ways. Through individualized strategies, structured activities, and supportive experiences, we help individuals develop greater awareness of their emotional states, triggers, coping strategies, and appropriate responses. The goal is to promote emotional regulation, self-regulation, positive relationships, participation, adaptive functioning, and overall emotional wellbeing.
