ASSESSMENT

At Takshashila Institute of Autism and Neurodevelopmental Sciences, we believe that every individual deserves to be understood before intervention begins. Assessment is not simply about assigning a diagnosis or label; it is a process of understanding an individual’s strengths, needs, abilities, challenges, and support requirements in order to develop an individualized and meaningful intervention plan.

Our assessment practices are guided by the APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, the WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), and applicable professional standards of the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).

Assessment therefore serves as the foundation for informed decision-making, individualized intervention, educational planning, family guidance, and monitoring of developmental progress.

  • Assessment First: Every intervention begins with a comprehensive understanding of the individual. Assessment findings are used to guide individualized intervention planning and, where appropriate, the development of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • Qualified Professionals: Assessments are conducted by appropriately qualified professionals, including RCI-registered Rehabilitation Professionals, within their respective areas of professional competence and scope of practice.
  • Evidence-Based Practice: We use appropriate standardized assessment tools, clinical observations, interviews, developmental information, and functional assessments according to the individual’s age, needs, presenting concerns, and assessment objectives.
  • Child-Centred & Play-Based: Where appropriate, assessment incorporates developmentally appropriate, engaging, and play-based methods to understand the child’s natural abilities, communication, behaviour, learning style, and interaction with the environment.
  • Strength-Based Approach: Assessment goes beyond identifying areas of difficulty. We identify individual strengths, interests, abilities, existing skills, and areas requiring support to facilitate participation, learning, and greater independence.
  • Contextual Assessment: Guided by the ICF framework, we consider the individual within their broader context, including family, school, social, cultural, and environmental factors, rather than relying solely on test scores.
  • Bias-Free Practice: Assessments are conducted with sensitivity to cultural, linguistic, developmental, educational, and individual differences, with an emphasis on fair and responsible interpretation.
  • Informed Consent: Parents, caregivers, or individuals, as appropriate, are informed about the purpose, procedures, potential benefits, limitations, and relevant considerations of the assessment before consent is obtained.
  • Confidentiality: Assessment information, records, and reports are maintained with strict confidentiality and are shared only with authorized individuals or in accordance with applicable consent, ethical, and legal requirements.
  • Respect for Diversity: We recognize disability and neurodiversity as important dimensions of human diversity and uphold the rights, dignity, inclusion, participation, and individuality of every person.
  • Ethical Practice: We are committed to professional integrity, scientific validity, responsible interpretation of assessment findings, confidentiality, and family-centred decision-making throughout the assessment process.
